Position Description

HEAD START BUS DRIVER

 

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Provides safe and punctual transportation for program children to and from Head Start classes, field trips, and program-related activities.  

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:  Works under the general supervision of the Site Supervisor.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:   Supervision of other employees is not a responsibility of this class.

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK:  An employee in this classification may perform any of the following duties. However, these examples do not include all the specific tasks that an employee may be expected to perform.  

1.         Transports passengers on program-related activities by the most direct route. Develops and plans bus routes in coordination with site team members and under the direction of supervisor. Responsible for safety of children on the bus. Uses positive approaches in directing and guiding children.  

2.         Keeps assigned vehicle clean and equipped for emergencies. Reports any malfunctions. Keeps accurate and complete records within allotted time lines – to include: all pre-trip and post-trip checks, class rosters, routes, mileage (as assigned), absentee child tracking, and other records as assigned. Closely follows program procedures for staff, family, and supervisor notification in the event that it is required.  

3.         Monitors own licensing and training requirements and ensures that current and legal bus driving requirements are maintained at all times. Provides results of physical examination as required or upon request.  

4.         Participates as member of the annual program self-assessment.  

5.         Regular attendance is a requirement of this position.  

6.         A professional and courteous manner and ability to work harmoniously with other employees, agencies, parents, and the general public are also required.  

7.         Maintains confidentiality and exercises sound judgment concerning privileged information.  

8.         May be assigned other responsibilities that enhance program goals and objectives.  

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY

Must have and maintain an Oregon Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record for the previous three years and a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), S Certificate and any certification required by the Oregon Department of Pupil Transportation required to drive a school bus, or the ability to obtain one in a timely manner.

Must possess and maintain First Aid and CPR certification, TB/Tuberculin assessment, and health verification.

Ability to manage physically active children ages 3-5 within weight range of up to 50 pounds, including restraining, guiding, pursuing, withstanding sudden movements.

Ability to bend, stoop and lift or move.

Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.

Employment subject to approval by Head Start Policy Council and enrollment in Oregon Child Care Division Criminal History Registry.

 

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

High school diploma or equivalent. Experience working with children ages 3 to 5. Previous bus driving experience and satisfactory completion of bus driving certification requirements, or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
