CSC: Youth Programs / Education Opportunities: Independent Living Program

Independent Living Program

The Independent Living Program is designed to teach life skills including job search and job retention and provide support to foster care youth who are or have been in foster care funded by Department of Human Services, Child Welfare (DHS)

The areas of focus in the ILP are money and food management, personal appearance, health, housekeeping, transportation, education planning, job search skills, job retention skills, emergency/safety, accessing community resources, interpersonal skills, understanding legal rights and responsibilities and housing issues. Current funding level supports service to 48 youth in the program per year.

October 1, 2000, new legislation took effect and the Chaffee Housing Subsidy was added. Also the Independence Program can now work with youth 14 through 21 years old.

Youth must be referred by a DHS case worker and have an open file. Youth who are over 18 years old and were in foster care may volunteer for enrollment. The State DHS office will open a file and case manage volunteer youth.
